The presentation of the transcript of the 'Book Calf' will take place tomorrow, Friday 29, at 20.00 hours, in the Convent of the Carmelite Fathers

The City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz, together with the Brotherhood of the True Cross and the Carmelite Fathers, has published a book with the transcript of the 'State Book' or 'Book Calf' of the Convent of the Discalced Carmelites of Caravaca.

The presentation will take place tomorrow, Friday, June 29, at 8:00 pm, at the Convento-Hospedería de Nuestra Señora del Carmen.

The State Book of the Convent of the Discalced Carmelites is a source of first order for the knowledge of the local history.

For this reason, various contributions by historians and a complete diplomatic study on the convent itself have been included, based on the enormous information provided through the transcript.

The transcription and critical edition of the book has been prepared over more than a year by a large team, including many experts such as María Rosa Gil Almela, Mª Magdalena Campillo Méndez, Francisca Amorós Vidal, Diego Marín Ruiz de Assin and Ignacio Husillos Tamarit.

The starting point of the work developed by this multidisciplinary team was the restoration and digitalization of the 'Book Calf' carried out by workshop of the General Archive of the Region of Murcia, through the project of conservation of the documentary heritage 'Crimson' of the Ministry of Culture , Tourism and Environment.

The original book has a total of 387 pages, which were carefully restored due to its deterioration over the centuries and constant use.

The State Book of the Discalced Carmelite Convent of Caravaca de la Cruz is the only document of this convent that has lasted over the centuries.

It is a unique historical work that reflects, not only the events that took place in the convent between 1623 and 2005, but also many aspects of Caravaca's life and society.

It is known with the term 'Book Calf' because it was the name used to designate the books bound in the skin of this animal given its importance, since it was considered that they were better preserved.

Since the foundation of the building, in 1587, by San Juan de la Cruz, the text contains the properties and belongings of the convent, its assets and rights, as well as the burials and biographical sketches of the friars and brothers who lived there.

It also includes avatars, happy and unfortunate, suffered by the institution.

The most abundant documents are dated in the seventeenth, eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, but also contains many others from the twentieth and even the twenty-first century.

In a certain way, the 'State Book' is a daily management book and even an accounting book, but with the exhaustive data that it contains, it is also a documentary treasure that allows to investigate historical aspects of all kinds, making known the daily, domestic, of the convent life of the time.
