"The benefits of the Triage System in the Regional Hospital of the Northwest" (02/07/2018)

Two years ago, the Popular Group took a motion to Plenary to urge the Ministry of Health to implement the Triage System in the emergency service of the Regional Hospital of the Northwest, as it was one of the few public hospitals in the Region of Murcia that they did not have it implanted.

This initiative had its detractors and defenders since it supposed a new ordering of the assistance work to give an answer to the mass demand of said emergency service, without forgetting that the assistance that was being provided up to that moment (December 2016) fulfilled all the clinical standards of quality of care comparable to any other hospital emergency service, providing care to patients as quickly as possible and assuming the assistance of serious patients until they were admitted to the ICU or transferred to the ICU.

As I indicated at the time, justified its implementation the fact that this emergency service is assuming a permanent increase in demand, so that we have gone from 41,139 patients treated in 2010 to 45,596 served in 2017 (9.23% plus).

With this system, the patient, when he arrives at the Emergency Service, is evaluated instantaneously, determining the urgency of the problem, its classification and the priority in being attended, avoiding delays in those patients who present greater risks, and reducing the anxiety to sick and family, always under the premise that "the urgent is not always serious and the serious is not always urgent."

With this system we have managed to: identify more quickly the patients who are at risk of life, prioritizing according to the clinical condition of the same, ensure the reassessment of the patients should wait, inform the patient and relatives about their condition and the approximate time waiting, which should never exceed 10 minutes and always attend to the most serious patient before.

This system has also made it possible to optimize patients' flows, directing them towards the most suitable area to be attended, reordering the resources of said service according to the demand and reducing the congestion of said service.

Despite the opinions against implanting this system (there were) time has given the right to those people who conveyed the concern, (users, doctors, nurses, etc.) so that from our work in the City we promoted this measure.

Nothing would have been possible without the involvement of these professionals (doctors, nurses, clinic assistants and non-health staff of the service), who day after day take the best out of themselves to always add value to the quality of care they have been providing , benefiting not only the citizens of Caravaca, but also the rest of the region, led at the time by a great boss (better person), who unfortunately left us almost a year ago: Mr. José María Melgares de Aguilar Mata.

My respects and recognition to those people who save lives, since the greatest wealth that a person can have is their own life.

From the Popular Group we want to thank the citizens of Caravaca de la Cruz, its districts and the entire Northwest Region for having welcomed this new health care system in the Emergency Service;

to the professionals their great work and their constant involvement and to the regional Government the increase in material and human resources, in spite of being always insufficient, for what we will continue working to try to increase them.
