'Lucia di Lammermoor' is a production from the English National Opera, which has already triumphed in several theaters since its premiere in 2010. The staging of David Alden, ghostly and oppressive, is inspired by the terrifying Victorian atmosphere of the stories by Edgar Allan Poe, giving the characters a strong psychological depth.

More about 'Lucía di Lammermoor'

Acclaimed production conceived by the American stage director David Alden for the English National Opera in 2010 and presented later in the operas of Washington DC, Toronto, Bonn, Oslo and Gothenburg, always with great success.

It is based on Walter Scott's truculent historical novel, 'The Bride of Lammermoor,' which Salvatore Camarano transformed into libreto.Donizetti composed the music in just one month, influenced by the triumph of I puritani, by his rival Vincenzo Bellini.

Daniel Oren, great specialist in belcantist works, will be at the head of the Royal Theater Choir and Orchestra.

Lucia di Lammermoor is a young orphan, unbalanced and dreamer, in love with Edgardo, enemy of the family, hated by her brother, who encourages her to marry a wealthy nobleman to save them from ruin.

For this, with the complicity of the chaplain and the bad arts of his guardian, Lucia makes believe that his lover has betrayed her.

Pushed to sign the marriage certificate, the young woman, broken by the pain and prey of madness, murders her husband on the night of nuptials, alienated in a kind of angelic reverie that culminates with his death and the subsequent suicide of his beloved. With this gruesome story and Donizetti's trade, brilliance and fecundity, the score flows, overwhelming, alternating the trepidante rhythm of the drama with long suspensions of theatrical action, in which the protagonists express their feelings with great expressive encouragement and a writing vocal full of artifices, often in favor of the psychological characterization of the characters.

Thus, the extreme difficulty of coloratura and the acute and demonic records of Lucia's role give her character an unreal and oneiric aura, immortalized by singers such as Maria Callas, Leyla Gencer, Joan Sutherland or Edita Gruberová.
