A theatrical concert commemorates the 450th anniversary of the foundation of the convent of the Jesuits in Caravaca de la Cruz (29/08/2018)

On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the founding of the Convent of the Jesuits in Caravaca de la Cruz, the Department of Culture, in collaboration with a group of artists and the Robles Chillida Foundation, will hold a theatrical concert on Friday September 7, in which Two disciplines of the performing arts will be mixed, such as theater and music.

The chosen stage is the old cloister of the Jesuit school, where at 9:00 pm you can listen to the formation of old music 'Ministriles de San Miguel', along with the soprano Pepi LLoret and the actors Luis Martínez and David Berbell.

Access will be free until full capacity is reached.

"We will begin the cultural program of September with the commemoration of a very important event in the history of Caravaca, for which a special activity has been prepared with instruments of the time and plays based on the presence of the Jesuit order in our city" , according to the mayor of Culture, Óscar Martínez.

For his part, the actor Luis Martinez has stressed that "behind this show, there is an important study and documentation to show the public historical events, anecdotes and, in short, lights and shadows of the presence of the Jesuits in Caravaca de the cross".

Through the staging, different facts that happened in the old caravan convent will be known thanks to the studies carried out by the historian Indalecio Pozo, all with an elaborate dramatic plot that will be accompanied by music from the time of the foundation.

The music will be that of the instruments that formed the old grouping of the chapels of the Spanish churches, as well as of the "musical bands" that paraded through the streets during the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, known as the minstrels.

With the ancient harmonies, the timbres of the instruments and the staging of a series of events linked to the convent, will discover the history of this school and the stay of this order in the town of Caravaca, as a prominent part of the history from the city.

The Jesuit foundation in the town of Caravaca is sponsored by Miguel de Reina, who around 1563 shows his intention to sponsor the establishment of this congregation, in order to give instruction to the young people of the place.

Subsequently, other residents of the town would join their efforts;

getting the Municipal Council involved, which was what yielded the Hermitage of San Bartolomé and an annex garden.

Finally, on August 30, 1568, Francisco de Borja himself entrusts Father Bartolomé de Bustamante, an experienced and elderly architect of the order, with the foundation of this convent with the realization of the necessary buildings for it;

He is assisted in his arduous task by the master builder Juan Lezcano, also a member of the Company.
