Santiago Ydáñez paints in Caravaca the largest canvas in Spain for the exhibition 'Mystics' (31/08/2018)

Santiago Ydáñez makes a portrait of San Juan de la Cruz large format for the exhibition 'Mystics.

Santa Teresa and San Juan de la Cruz, light in the Golden Age ', to be held at the Compañía de Jesús de Caravaca from September 28 to January 6.

The Andalusian artist, who currently resides in Berlin, is running this work in the exhibition hall, whose dimensions are 14 meters high by 8 meters wide, being "the largest canvas in Spain and probably in Europe, as a reference it is usually the 'final judgment' of Tintoretto, in Venice, which measures four meters less, "as explained by the curator of the exhibition, Nacho Ruiz, in the visit that the mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Moreno;

the Minister of Tourism and Culture of the Autonomous Community, Miriam Guardiola, and the elder sister of the Brotherhood of the True Cross, Mari Carmen López, made the room, at the moment when the artist began with the execution of the work .

The Mayor has expressed his satisfaction for continuing "the wake of great exhibitions of the Jubilee Year 2017, thanks to this show based in San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa de Jesús, as key figures of European humanism, which created foundations in Caravaca de the Cross, being the only city of Spain, together with Segovia, in which this circumstance occurs ".

Also, José Moreno has stressed that it is necessary to continue highlighting the importance of the two mystics in the history of the city, with this exhibition and other initiatives already underway, such as the Teresian conferences and concerts and the signaling of the Camino of San Juan de la Cruz.

The Minister of Tourism and Culture has ensured that 'Mystics' will be "a historical exhibition, a journey through art from the sixteenth century to the twenty-first century, through two important figures who left their mark on Caravaca, being a cultural event of first order, which comes to reinforce the character of the city as a permanent destination of pilgrimage ".

Santiago Ydañez, named by some art critics as 'the XXL painter', has been inspired by a baroque carving of San Juan de la Cruz, which he found in Peru.

One of the great motivations of this artist is to cover works of Art History, presented with his particular interpretation through strokes and the use of color.

The artist from Jaén studied Fine Arts at the University of Granada and obtained, among other recognitions, the ABC Painting Prize, 2002 Painting Generation Prize from Caja Madrid, the scholarship from the College of Spain in Paris of the Ministry of Culture in 2001 and the Scholarship of the Marcelino Botín Foundation in 1998. Together with four other Spanish artists, such as photographer Sergio Belinchón, they manage an initiative to showcase their latest works in the center of the city of Berlin.
