The mayor of Caravaca has met with Professor Michael J Walker to plan protection measures to the site and claim regional aid for research of archaeological heritage

More than twenty experts from different international universities start working this Friday, June 28, in the Paleoanthropological and Archaeological Excavations Campaign of 'La Cueva Negra', located in the La Encarnación caravan district.

The mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Francisco García, has had a meeting with Professor Michael J. Walker, one of the directors of the excavation, together with the archaeologist of Mupantquat, Mariano Vicente López, and the professor at the University of Murcia María Haber Uriarte.

"The excavation campaign is celebrating its 30th anniversary this summer, with results that have consolidated this privileged place of our municipality in an important focus of attention for scientists from around the world," said the mayor, who has underlined constant commitment of the Murcian Association for the Study of Paleoanthropology and Quaternary (Mupantquat), which has a collaboration agreement with the City of Caravaca de la Cruz and the University of Murcia so that each year this excavation can be carried out.

"Coinciding with this 30th anniversary, from the City Council we want to reinforce the protection measures to the caravaqueño site and also request the support of the Autonomous Community, through its aid for research and intervention in archaeological heritage, since it is fair that the different public administrations support this enclave of international reference for knowledge of human evolution, where, with an age close to one million years, was located the oldest European hand ax and the first presence of fire made by man outside Africa " .

The XXXX Paleoanthropological and Archaeological Excavation Campaign of the Cueva Negra del Estrecho del Río Quípar will continue until July 19.

In order to know the results of the same, a presentation will be made to the media and an open day will be held so that all those who are interested can know firsthand how the multidisciplinary team and the advances that occur every summer.

The excavations carried out in the last two decades have provided valuable information about the first hominids.

The deposit corresponds to the end of the Ancient Pleistocene (or Lower).

The cave was frequented by human beings who left a trace of their presence in the form of remains of fire and a hand ax, both being the oldest in Europe.

In addition, numerous minor paleolithic tools and abundant remains of fauna have been located, belonging in many cases to micro mammals and large mammals, from which conclusions can be drawn about the ways of life and subsistence of man in Prehistory.

The human beings that inhabited the cave probably belonged to the extinct species of "Heidelburg Man" or "Homo heidelbergensis", which inhabited Europe between 900,000 and 150,000 years ago, in the Pleistocene, and was ancestral species of the 'Neanderthal Man' u 'Homo neanderthalensis'.
