The information campaign on air quality and tropospheric ozone visit Caravaca (05/09/2016)

La Casa de la Cultura 'Emilio Sáez' hosts this week the traveling exhibition on air quality and ozone, organized by Ecologists in Action, in collaboration with the City of Caravaca de la Cruz.

The exhibition will be closed this Friday, September 9, with a briefing, which will start at 19.00.

"The Ecologists in Action organization is developing throughout the summer a campaign for different parts of the Region of Murcia, with the dual aim of improving the information available to the citizen on air quality ozone and try to reduce their exposure when the pollution is high, "said the councilor responsible for the area of Environment, Enrique Fuentes, who has called for associations, groups and the general population go to the talk on Friday, in which it will affect, especially in protection measures.

From 'Ecologists in Action' report that ozone is a secondary pollutant that originates from photochemical reactions between its precursor pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly emitted by urban traffic and some major industries such as thermal, chemical and petrochemical plants, divided between Cartagena and the regional capital.

Ozone pollution can cause respiratory problems, eye irritation, increased symptoms of asthma and allergies.

This substance, in addition to affecting health, has consequences for vegetation, reducing up to 20% productivity garden crops (such as tomatoes, watermelon and lettuce, among others), increasing their vulnerability to diseases and pests and generating serious damage to our natural environment.

In so far añoya they have occurred 31 days exceeding the legal target (120 micrograms of ozone per cubic meter of air) at the station of Lorca and 43 days at the station Caravaca).

'Ecologists in Action' recalls that the legislation establishes a maximum of 25 exceedance days per year averaged over three years, so has already been surpassed in Caravaca and all the Northern Zone of the Region for the triennium 2014 -2016 in 30 days.

The days with exceedances would be even greater if the criterion chuch World Health Organization (WHO) since 2005, has lowered the goal of health protection at 100 micrograms of ozone per cubic meter of air is used.

'Ecologists in Action' denounces the lack of transparency on page air quality in the Region of Murcia, where the actual data of exceedances are in a place inaccessible to the public, which "gives the impression of an intention to hide the problem of air pollution. "

Tropospheric ozone is also known as "bad" ozone, as opposed to stratospheric ozone found in the upper levels of the atmosphere and protects us from solar radiation.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated at 1,800 annual premature deaths in Spain caused as a result of exposure to ozone levels as those normally recorded in the region of Murcia.

Murcia is one of the areas with ozone problems throughout the Spanish state, producing in 2016 an increase in the concentration of this pollutant compared to previous years, so that 'Ecologists in Action' asks an Improvement Plan Quality Air on this specific pollutant in our region.
