The plenary of the Regional Assembly has approved the motion presented by the Popular Party in which the Government of Spain is requested to promote the conditions that best guarantee the exercise of religious freedom in Spain.
As explained by the deputy proponent of the initiative, Victor Martinez-Carrasco, "in recent times there has been an increase in attacks on the fundamental right of religious freedom," and has recalled episodes such as the assault on the university chapel Complutense, in which a councilor of the Town Council of Madrid participated, or the version of the Our Father that was heard in an awards ceremony in Barcelona with the approval of its mayoress, Ada Colau.
Víctor Martínez-Carrasco believes that "there are a series of actions that cover rights such as freedom of expression and artistic creation also damage other fundamental rights that must be preserved."
For that reason, he considers that "the conditions that best guarantee the exercise of religious freedom should be reinforced".
The initiative, which has been endorsed by the Citizens group after incorporating an amendment, also proposes to monitor the performance of public administrations in a way that respects the non-denominational nature of the state, without turning into negative secularism, To combat the phenomenon of radicalization and to maintain by the public powers an alert to the risks of instrumentalization of the religion for purposes other than its own.
"The Popular Parliamentary Group defends freedom as a fundamental right and religious freedom is one of them," said Victor Martínez-Carrasco.
