The Cross of Lampedusa, symbol of solidarity and union between peoples, arrives in Caravaca (19/05/2017)

He travels around the world to invite reflection on the drama and the emergency situation that thousands of people live on the shores of the Mediterranean

Caravaca de la Cruz has received the Cross of Lampedusa, who pilgrims to the city on the occasion of the Jubilee Year 2017 on the initiative of the Italian foundation 'Casa del Espíritu y del Arte'.

The mayor, José Moreno, together with the Councilor for Tourism, Gloria Gómez, and the eldest sister of the Colegio de la Vera Cruz, Elisa Giménez-Girón, has received the Cross in the Plaza del Arco, from where she has moved to The church of El Salvador, accompanied by students of Nuestra Señora de La Consolación school and neighbors, as well as the ambassador in Spain of the Foundation 'Casa dello Spirito e delle Arti Onlus', Graziella Coccu, and the delegate of the foundation In the Region of Murcia, Mercedes Rocamora.

The Lampedusa Cross was created following the tragedy of the island of Lampedusa, in which 366 people from North African countries died.

Made by the artist Francesco Tuccio, it is more than two meters high and is built with wooden remains from the boats of immigrants and refugees, sunk on the shores of Lampedusa Island.

It was created so that both laity and religious, meditate on the drama that suffer these people who lose or risk their lives in search of a better future.

In 2014 he received Pope Benedict's blessing in Rome, and since then he has become a universal symbol of dignity and solidarity with the humanitarian emergency that thousands of immigrants and refugees suffer.

On the occasion of this pilgrimage, several parallel activities have been scheduled, such as the round table 'The Cross of Lampedusa, symbol of dignity and solidarity with immigrants and refugees', to be held today, Friday 19, at 18.00 in the House of the cross.

On Tuesday, May 23, at 8:30 p.m., Nigerian priest Kenneth Chukwuka will tell about his experience as a refugee in the parish of El Salvador.

The Cross of Lampedusa will rise tomorrow, Saturday 20, at 12.00 to the Royal Basilica of the Santísima and Vera Cruz and at 18.00 hours there is a welcome Mass, which will be presided over by the archbishop emeritus of Burgos.

After a week in the Castle of Caravaca de la Cruz, visit the monastery of Las Claras (May 28), the parish of San Francisco (May 29 and 30), the church of Our Lady of Carmen (May 31), The school Our Lady of Consolation (June 1) and the parish of Santa Bárbara de Archivel (June 2 and 3).
