Seven town councils join to promote the 'Camino de San Juan de la Cruz', from Beas de Segura to Caravaca (06/07/2017)

The project, part of the Carmelites of Caravaca, includes municipalities of Andalusia, Castilla la Mancha and Murcia

The mayors of Caravaca de la Cruz, Beas de Segura, Hornos, Santiago de la Espada and Pontones, together with representatives of the Discalced Carmelites, have held a meeting to promote the 'Camino de San Juan de la Cruz', as a historical pilgrimage route , Which is born in the heart of the Sierra del Segura and runs through towns in Andalusia, Castilla la Mancha and Murcia.

"It is a common project that also extends to the municipalities of Nerpio and Moratalla, with which we embark on a path of collaboration to strengthen the traditions and history of a natural region, and which we would like to expand to other places like Férez or Letur, Said José Moreno, the mayor of Caravel.

It is, he added, "an experience sponsored by Caravaca Barefoot Carmelites, who last year carried out the same road that on several occasions made San Juan de la Cruz to Caravaca de la Cruz."

For his part, the councilman of Beas de Segura, Sebastián Molina, emphasized that "the municipalities that mark the beginning and the end of this route of pilgrimage have the experience and common knowledge of the route 'Traces of Teresa', launched On the occasion of the V Centenary of the Birth of St. Teresa ', that we must now be able to export to this Way of San Juan de la Cruz.

The Prior of the Discalced Carmelites of Caravaca de la Cruz, Pascual Gil, affirmed that "with the union between the municipalities of the municipalities that are on the path of this pilgrimage, a dream is being fulfilled of the Carmelite community to follow the Steps of San Juan de la Cruz, through a road with more than 400 years of history.

The way is traced by the same towns and places that the doctor of the Church toured during his trips to Caravaca, from 1579 to 1587, when he was sent by St. Teresa of Jesus to assist the nuns in the first chapter of the Order founded in 1575.
