Next constitution of the Council for the Defense of the Northwest (17/04/2018)

Conclusion of the Debate: Past, present and future of water in the Northwest Region.

Intensive crops and the transformation from dry to irrigated, "they steal our water and also contaminate us".

ARECA (Association of Communities of Irrigators of Caravaca) convened last Friday, April 13, in Navares a meeting of work, debate and proposals, with that title.

To this end, the organizers invited a group of representatives from several communities of Regantes de Caravaca, specifically Singla, Caneja, Navares, Fuentes del Marqués, as well as the Archivel Neighborhood Association, the Association of Irrigators in Defense of the Vega of the Argos river of Calasparra, of Caralluma, of the Basin Platform of the Segura Libre de Fraking.

We also wanted to count on the contributions of Pedro Guerrero of Fecoam Frutos Secos, for their tenacious struggle against the rain prevention systems and the complicated task of involving the different administrations.

And, above all, we want to highlight the presence, in support of the objectives of the conveners, of Mr. Pedro Costa Morata, a native of Águilas, the National Environment Prize in 1998, an engineer and journalist, with a very long and proven track record as a defender of the Environment.

The President of ARECA, Alfonso Sánchez, reviewed the serious effects on fountains and springs due to the abuses that have been taking place in several farms in the Comarca, in which the illegal or irregular transformation of rainfed land into intensive fruit and vegetable irrigation has It has been especially bulky since 1990 to date: the El Chopillo de Moratalla farm, from where important groundwater shipments are also transferred to the Campo de Cartagena, the Roblecillo, Majada de las Vacas and Gorrafina farms and a large area of fruit trees in the Oicas, in the area of Archivel, as well as several farms in the area of Caneja, highlighting here also the excesses that the City Council has been committing in the extraction of underground waters for supply.

As a whole, we would be talking about estimates of more than 2,000 Has, without control, of dry land transformed into irrigation in the Comarca.

After a debate, the following proposals are reached with a regional scope:

Make an inventory as detailed and approximate in all the areas indicated above, about the transformation from dry to irrigated or from traditional irrigation to intensive crops, with details of surfaces and estimation of annual volumes that may be consumed illegally or margin of any concession, as a basis for new complaints to the CHS or that may end up in the hands of the Office of the Prosecutor.

Recover the spirit of the now defunct Water Platform of the Northwest Region, which was so successful at the end of the 90s. For this, the next creation, at the end of May, of the Council for the Defense of the Northwest has been proposed, with the objective to safeguard the environmental heritage of the Comarca in general, highlighting its severely threatened water resources, without a doubt the most important in the Region, which we do not want to end up being devoured by the same aggressive practices, which bypassing all regulations, have led to the disaster of Mar Menor ".
