Urbanism and sustainable quality of life (17/05/2015)

Monica Sanchez Garcia, part of the Popular Party candidate.

Degree in Geomatics and Surveying Engineering and secondary school teacher at the College of Consolation.

Our region, the Northwest region, is situated on the southern edge of the Mediterranean arc, characterized by economic and demographic dynamism.

From the geographical point of view the situation in the Northwest Region within the region is far from the main axis, this situation is reinforced by the border position and step between the coast and inland area of Almeria, Granada and Albacete.

Isolation constitutes one of the main factors in the construction of identity: our cultural and natural heritage.

But despite this general territorial situation, the Northwest has great potential for development and regional integration.

It is a land of contrasts and riches, fertile soils, dedicated to mountains of ornamental rock and limestone.

The diversity, size and favorable conservation status of the types of vegetation are a natural resource of first magnitude in the region.

Our town, Caravaca de la Cruz, with almost 900 km2, from the standpoint of land use shows administrative simplicity that offers facilities for territorial management, but the extent and structure of the population also creates problems as necessary provide services to dispersed settlements and sparsely populated occasions.

The 14 villages and the town of Caravaca de la Cruz, are governed by their environment, climate and geographical situation, ultimately has developed a pattern of planning, that meets these premises.

The model of urban growth Caravaca has its origin in the Castle, located at the top of the hill, and was developed by the less steep slopes up and down, both for safety reasons, to fend off a military attack, such as economy, preserve the orchards.

Over time, the noble titles that have large tracts of land built on the main streets of the city center large palatial homes, in most cases only as occasional residences.

Also the different religious orders are entered into the new territories, creating their convents and churches.

The historical development of core marks a major Caravaca in the landscape of the Northwest region of Murcia and visual landmark.

In the second half of the twentieth century, the historic quarter of the city center has undergone a gradual depopulation.

This process has been slowed and today remains relevant social life and the existence of an important architectural heritage, although it is always improved, with great potential.

The historic town of Caravaca is a challenge in planning matters for two reasons, to find a solution to revitalize it with the people that inhabits it and to know and show it to other citizens and visitors.

Caravaca is a model city has been modernized in recent decades in all sectors, thereby urbanism has adapted to the changes that the modernization of society demanded.

The provision of equipment and urban structure has revolved around premises as population growth or the capital of the Northwest region.

Is this enough?

When urbanization trends revolve around sustainability between development and nature, quality of life without compromising the environment for future generations, looking for urban spaces of leisure, recreation and enjoyment Are we doing enough?

Urbanism and land arise from man's need for a better use of available space, ie, increases the quality of life of men and women living populations.

We must concentrate on revitalizing privileged areas such as New Town, Long Street, New Street and many more that make this privileged area of our city, not forgetting of course the Calle Mayor, the point where the building of the former convent of the Mothers is Carmelites, magnificent space, to provide it with training and culture, cornerstones for a modern, sensible society with its natural and historical heritage stones.

To understand the value of our historic town, we must know and make it known to all citizens living in Caravaca and visitors, feel the awe of your environment is culture.

Quality of life is also working to achieve a spatial model that prevents districts suffer depopulation.

Improving highway access, expanding the highway to the entrance of Barranda, industrial estates services that help us generate wealth and employment, adequate lighting, community centers, public buildings useful and sustainable service oriented, well paved urban and intercity access, appropriate signals, improved furniture to enjoy urban spaces, etc.

Getting the commercial fabric in urban planning and public services is necessary, as an endowment in the town and villages.

It is a challenge, a goal: to work to achieve what is the result of the demand of modern society in which Caravaca has become;

work to develop a regional model of sustainable urban development and achieving increased quality of life.
