The temple of the Incarnation, landmark scientific meeting in iberorromana religiosity (19/11/2015)

On the hill of the hermitage of the Incarnation (Caravaca de la Cruz) specialists are one of the best examples of the entire national territory of the processes of cultural contact between the Romans and the Iberians.

That became clear in the last scientific meeting in which participated twenty experts from various universities, research institutes and Spanish museums, which researchers from Italy and the Netherlands and a number of students from the University of Murcia joined.

The scientific meeting was held on 12, 13 and 14 November with the title "The end time of the Iberian sanctuaries impact processes and consolidation of the Roman world" and was organized by the Archaeological Institute of Mérida (CSIC-Government Extremadura) and the University of Murcia, with the collaboration of the City of Caravaca de la Cruz, through the Municipal Archaeological Museum 'La Soledad' Cajamurcia Foundation, the city of Murcia and the autonomous government of the Region.

All participants in this meeting I traveled to Caravaca de la Cruz for a visit to the Shrine of the Incarnation, because in the words of the municipal archaeologist Francisco Brotons- this place is a necessary and obligatory reference in religious studies iberorromana, since preserves important remains of the Iberian sanctuary and two Roman temples built in those early days that give the keys to this process.

During the scientific meeting, the experts assessed and discussed the different models and cases of cultural contact between Romans and indigenous people in different geographic areas of study, especially with the Iberians.

The starting point of these studies in the Iberian Peninsula is in the research and Francisco Sebastián Ramallo Asensio Brotóns Yagüe held in the Cerro de la Ermita de la Encarnación de Caravaca de Cruz and that led to establish some monumentalization Iberian sanctuaries of the peninsular Southeast, following architectural models imported from central Italy in the second century.

"Next year the papers presented at this meeting will be published on Schedules File Spanish Archaeology, contributing no doubt to give greater projection to this extraordinary caravaqueño archaeological site, which is an important resource for cultural tourism in the districts of the municipality, "said Francisco Brotóns has advanced.

As already mentioned above, members of the scientific meeting paid a visit to the old Chapel of the Incarnation to know the status of this monument and observe on the spot the keys to their historical interpretation.

But the researchers also went to the Cerro de las Fuentes Archivel and the Archaeological Museum of "La Soledad" giving these visits by meeting ended.

This is the third meeting of its kind convened around the religiosity of prehistory, following those held in Merida in 2010 and 2014.

The scientific meeting gave special prominence to the latest research from the sanctuaries of Cerro de los Santos (Montealegre del Castillo), the incarnation (Caravaca de la Cruz) and light (Verdolay, Murcia).
