El Misteri d'Elx is represented in Caravaca de la Cruz for the Holy Year 2010 (11/05/2010)

El Misteri d'Elx, the only living example of medieval religious drama considered a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, will be performed next Saturday, May 15, in the parish church of El Salvador.

The representation of Mystery is one of the activities supported by the Caja del Mediterráneo (CAM) to enhance and promote the Holy Year and closer ties between the towns of Caravaca de la Cruz and Elche.

The Plenary Hall Caravaca City Council this morning welcomed the presentation of this event, considered the only living example of medieval religious drama dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, with the presence of the mayor, Domingo Aranda, the president of the Territorial Council Cash Mediterranean Murcia, Angel Martinez, President of the Committee of the Board of Capella Misteri d'Elx, Antonio Larrotcha.

The staging of the Mystery, in the words of the mayor, is one of the major events that take place in Caravaca de la Cruz during the Holy Year 2010.

Also, Aranda wanted to thank the collaboration of the Board of Mystery and the strong commitment that the CAM has to Caravaca and Holy Year.

El Misteri d'Elx continues to be performed annually in the interior of the Basilica of Santa Maria, for a papal privilege 1632, as a tribute to the town of Elche dedicated to their patron.

Its splendid artistic and aesthetic content as well as its uniqueness and history have been recognized by UNESCO with the award in the category of a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The development of the Mystery of Elche is based on traditional stories about the death and Assumption of the Virgin Mary were transmitted orally in the early years of Christianity, and who have an obvious parallel in some detail with stories of death and resurrection of Christ.

These stories were collected from the fourth century in the so-called Apocryphal Gospels.

The most notable artistic side of the Festa is the musical.

Following the medieval tradition, the drama of Elche is completely sung and contains melodies that come from different eras.

There are clearly songs of medieval origin.

There is an interesting section Renaissance and ornaments are detected and added to the Baroque period and later.

However, the music unit of work is extraordinary, as has been shown the various studies and investigations conducted in this regard.

Also following the medieval tradition, the singing of the mystery is sung a capella, ie without musical accompaniment.

As the only exceptions are Araceli interventions, which are accompanied by guitar and harp.

They are currently members of the Chapel of the Mystery of Elche, about seventy adults and thirty children, who interpret Assumptionist drama.

These include three priests who perform the roles of San Pedro, the Angel Mayor of Araceli and the Eternal Father.

Although, with few exceptions, none of these singers are professional, the combination of voices reached-based tests continued throughout the year, and good work is evident in the celebrations.
