About eighty works of great masters of painting and universal sculpture are part of the exhibition 'Mystics.
Santa Teresa and San Juan de la Cruz, light in the Golden Age ', which opens its doors today and will remain in the hall of the old church of the Society of Jesus until January 8.
The exhibition was inaugurated by the Mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Moreno, and the Minister of Tourism and Culture of the regional government, Miriam Guardiola, accompanied by the Bishop of the Diocese of Cartagena, José Manuel Lorca Planes, the Father Superior of the Iberian Province of the Discalced Carmelites, Miguel Márquez, patrons of the Camino de la Cruz Foundation, members of the Brotherhood of the True Cross and numerous representatives of the Discalced Carmel.
In the words of the mayor, "we are facing an exhibition with soul and speech, which allows us to approach the legacy of Saint John and Saint Teresa of Jesus, two universal mystics who created foundations in Caravaca de la Cruz, being the only city in Spain, together with Segovia, in which this circumstance occurs ".
José Moreno has also had words of thanks for all the institutions and people who have made the opening of 'Mystics' possible.
The curator of the exhibition and director of the 'Mystics' project, Nacho Ruiz, was in charge of guiding the first tour of the hall, where you can admire works by artists such as 'El Greco', Murillo, Alonso Cano, Ribera and Luis de Morales 'El Divino', among other important references of Spanish painting and sculpture.
Outstanding pieces of contemporary art have also been incorporated, such as those signed by Chillida, Tápies or the large-format portrait of Santiago Ydáñez.
In addition, you can see relics of draft such as the fingers of San Juan de la Cruz, from Úbeda, and documents such as the handwritten and handwritten letter of Santa Teresa de Jesús, property of the Municipal Archive of the City of Caravaca de la Cruz.
'Mystics' shows the story of mysticism in the history of Western culture through the figures of Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross and their presence in Caravaca de la Cruz, where both founded convents.
To this end, a complete collection of works has been compiled, including sculptures, embroidery, goldsmithing, and bibliographical material, from the 16th to the 21st century.
The works exhibited in Caravaca de la Cruz belong to public and private collections from different parts of the Spanish geography.
Specifically, the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Santander Foundation, the Abelló Collection, the National Museum of Sculpture, the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia, the Nieves Fernández Gallery, the Discalced Carmelites, the Museum of Fine Arts of Murcia and the Brotherhood of the Vera Cruz.

Santa Teresa and San Juan de la Cruz, light in the Golden Age 'has the Camino de la Cruz Foundation as the main sponsor, with the support of the City of Caravaca de la Cruz, the Autonomous Community, the Diocese of Cartagena and the Carmel Barefoot.
The patrons of this foundation are the Reina Group, Grupo Fuertes, Estrella Levante, La Caixa, Cafés Salzillo, Limcamar, Interapothek and the Catholic University San Antonio UCAM.
Other companies and entities such as the Santander Foundation, the Cajamurcia Foundation, Automoción del Noroeste (Aunorsa), Desguaces París and Casa del Pintor have also collaborated with the project.
The exhibition will remain open to the public from 11:00 to 14:00 and from 5:00 to 7:00 pm (closed on Sunday afternoon and Monday).
Free guided tours will be held at 11.15, 12.30 and 17.30, subject to reservation of a seat at 868 175 188.
