Pistachio is one of the experimental plantations that are grown in the Agrarian Demonstration Center 'Nogueras de Arriba' and that are showing, with good production results, its adaptation to the weather conditions of the Northwest Region.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Autonomous Community, Miguel Angel del Amor, and the Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Environment of the City of Caravaca de la Cruz, Enrique Fuentes, visited this farm, which has 14 experimental plots and is located in the hamlet of Los Prados.
The farm 'Las Nogueras' caravaqueña is managed by the Northwest Agricultural Land Office and is one of the five demonstration and technology transfer centers that the Ministry of Water, Agriculture and Environment has in the Region.
This space has more than fifteen hectares.
Enrique Fuentes has highlighted the importance of applied research to agricultural activity, both traditional crops and new species, in geographical areas such as the municipality of Caravaca de la Cruz, where climate limitations make the profitability of crops sometimes less than in other places.
The results of the investigations carried out with different varieties indicate that with half of the irrigation endowments required by other fruit trees, there are pistachio trees, like the 'Sirona', capable of producing productions that approach those of the almond tree, but with the difference that pistachio prices in the market are triple that of almonds.
In their fourth year, since planting, they already produce about one ton of dry fruit per hectare.
