The system takes advantage of the solar energy of the area and is able to guarantee, in case of interruption of the supply, up to five hours of energy
The plant has been inaugurated with the assistance of the CEO of Iberdrola Spain, the Minister of Enterprise and Industry and the Mayor of Caravaca, among other representatives of the public administrations and the electricity company
Caravaca de la Cruz has been the municipality chosen by the Iberdrola company to launch a pioneer project in Spain, which ensures the electricity supply in case of breakdown and uses the energy of nearby photovoltaic plants.
The mayor thanked this important investment in the municipality, "which has allowed the development of an innovative solution, which avoids the construction of 22 kilometers of power lines in areas of great environmental value and that, in addition, improves the quality of energy supply in districts and the use of solar energy generated in the area. "
i-DE, the electricity distribution company of Iberdrola, has inaugurated this energy storage system with lithium-ion batteries, which has meant an investment of about two million euros and that in case of interruption of supply can provide up to five hours of electrical energy to the caravan districts of Barranda, El Moral, El Moralejo and Los Royos, and to the moratalleras of Inazares and Cañada de la Cruz.
The opening ceremony of the plant has been attended by the Minister of Enterprise and Industry, Ana Martínez Vidal, and Ángeles Santamaría, CEO of Iberdrola Spain, who have been accompanied by the mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Francisco García and the institutional delegate of Iberdrola in this community, Patricio Valverde, among other representatives of the administrations and the electricity company.
Adverse climate and rural environment
The special circumstances of the rural environment of Caravaca de la Cruz have determined the choice of enclave for this pioneering project.
In recent years, the area has been recording very adverse weather conditions that cause incidents in the distribution network.
Likewise, it is an area made up of several small and dispersed consumption centers, which make it possible for a fault to leave several populations without service.
To this are added the long distances that must be traveled to reach the source of the problem, making it difficult to resolve incidents.
Smart storage system
In Caravaca de la Cruz there are several photovoltaic plants of a certain dimension that increase the tension of the line during the hours of greatest sun exposure.
A battery with these characteristics is able to adjust the voltage to the appropriate values and be ready to intervene as a second source of power supply in the event of a power failure.
The storage plant is equipped with an intelligent system capable of assessing situations and deciding which part of the network remains in operation from the battery, taking into account the real consumption, the production capacity of the surrounding photovoltaic plants and the state of the Battery charge, among other aspects.
