The magnitude of the crisis that the goat sheep sector is going through as a result of the state of alarm by the covid-19 and the closure of the HORECA channel (outside the home), essential for supplying Hospitality establishments, focused on both the local consumer and to the tourism industry, has prompted the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to allocate an aid of 10 million euros to compensate sheep and goat farmers for the marketing difficulties they are experiencing due to the decrease in meat consumption of these species during the months of March and April.This aid has special significance for Caravaca and for the rest of the natural region where there is an important extensive livestock herd, mainly from Segureño sheep, essential for the economic activity of our ranchers, also to reduce rural depopulation and, of course, from the environmental point of view.The payment will be made per eligible sheep and goat and, to simplify the procedure, the farmers will not have to make any additional management since they will automatically receive it associated with their request for aid from the Common Agricultural Policy (PAC) that they present every year.The aid of 10 million euros from the Ministry will be added to the annual income of about 168 million euros from the CAP for the sheep / goat sector and can be complemented by others that are being requested from the European Commission and those established by the Autonomous Community if the Government of the Region of Murcia so decides.From the Socialist Municipal Group of Caravaca de la Cruz we encourage all caravaqueños to consume lamb meat from Segura, thus helping a sector, very ours, which is now especially affected by the pandemic we are suffering and we hope that the Autonomous Community of the Region Murcia also provide aid for this strategic sector, complementing those already announced by the Ministry of Agriculture.
