The next 19, 20, 21 and 22 May, Caravaca de la Cruz hosts the first edition of the first Fair Sheep Segureño and Ranching, consisting of a sample of native cattle and gastronomic products of the land with Designation of Origin, route from the top, round tables, tastings and workshops, among other activities.
With this fair is intended, according to statements by the head of the area of ​​Agriculture, Enrique Fuentes, 'underline the importance for the municipality, the rest of the Northwest Region and the neighboring territories of Albacete, Almeria, Granada and Jaen have livestock extensive, giving, among other things, the many possibilities and advantages offered segureño lamb meat as a delicacy that, along with other products from our agricultural environment, we must strengthen ".
This event, to be held at the fairgrounds 'El Salvador', also includes school activities with the aim of spreading the historical importance that the sectors of livestock and agriculture have had on the economy of the municipality.
In this sense, the mayor of Education, Esther Poveda, wanted to emphasize the involvement of all primary schools, who participated during the month of April in conferences and in the drawing contest and writing.
"During the fair will learn more related to the world of livestock and attend workshops shear and cowbells aspects", he has advanced Poveda.
In addition to municipal officials Livestock and Education, the presentation of this first Fair Sheep Ranching Segureño and was attended by the president of the National Sheep Breeders Association Segureño (ANCOS), José Puntas;

Some of the activities taking place within the framework of this fair is the exhibition of livestock and food products, the route of the cover and dishes of segureño lamb and sample local products, among which those with designation origin, such as Calasparra rice, wines and cheeses Murcia Bullas.
The program is completed with the round table 'Harnessing corpses of small ruminants by carrion birds' (Friday, 20, at 12.00, classroom Cajamurcia), the performance of Animeros of Caravaca (Saturday, 21, at 11.30 hours, fairground), the presentation of awards for rural women and Pastor of the Year (Saturday, 21, at 12.30, fairground), the popular tasting by the PGI Cordero Segureño (Saturday, 21, at 13.30 , fairgrounds) and the conference 'Cattle routes' (Saturday, 21, at 20.00 pm in classroom Cajamurcia).
The fair will be closed with the recipe contest by the association of restaurateurs, to be held at 12.30 pm on Sunday, May 22.
The lamb segureño
Sheep farming is of great importance to socio-economic level in the Northwest region, with a prominent census sheep bred with a traditional production system, rooted in the rural areas, integrated in nature and therefore environmentally friendly.
The segureña sheep is a breed characterized by high hardiness and high production levels, which has helped maintain significant levels of purity in the difficult environment in which operates.
It is a meat production sheep, a lamb producer of high quality by the characteristics of the breed characteristics, production system and the environment in which it occurs.
Segureño lamb meat is characterized by its pink color, juiciness and tender texture.
These qualities distinguish it from other national and foreign sheep.
It is a breed of sheep adapted to life in the Sierra de Segura and upland areas on the banks of the river.
Since 2013, the Protected Designation of Origin ensures traceability and quality of lamb throughout the production chain to the consumer by corresponding records and identification systems of the IGP in the various links of the same.
