Conservation works, consolidation and restoration of the walls of the Castillo de la Cruz returned to the canvases and towers image and original state, with moisture problems repair and replacement of the faults of stone elements.
As reported by the Councillor responsible for Planning, Enrique Fuentes, after assembly of scaffolding necessary works have begun, with a total budget of 400,000 euros, of which 30.6% is contributed by the City of Caravaca and the remaining amount the Ministry of Development, through its program 1.5% for conservation projects Cultural Heritage of Spanish.
In the coming weeks he will intervene in various locations inside and outside the walled enclosure, built in the monumental Castle of Caravaca de la Cruz, declared of Cultural Interest.
The planned measures are aimed at improving the general conditions of the structure, restoring their original condition, without introducing new design contributions or alter the image.
The main objectives are to preserve the site in the best possible condition and give it greater security and accessibility.
In virtually all of the towers or stretches of wall material losses joints between blocks and even occasional losses stone elements are seen, which has favored over the years the entry of rainwater and accumulation of debris .
The causes of the deterioration of the wall are pollution and the action of atmospheric agents, especially in the northern part of the enclosure, where persistent moisture has caused visible spots in the structure and a potential risk of detachment is favored.
One of the important aspects of this work is the installation of new system of collecting rainwater, which minimizes the volume of infiltrating from the ground to the walls.
This will be achieved through a network of channels, using the existing slope, leading water to its exit to the outside network through the cover.
Also other actions related to security, with the placement of elements of protection in areas at risk of falls, especially in the areas of entry to the wells and stairs to the towers are contemplated.
The walled enclosure of the Castle
The walled enclosure of the Castle of Caravaca de la Cruz has (X and XI centuries) Islamic origins, although much of the walls begin in the thirteenth century and reconstructed until well into the nineteenth.
It has a polygonal irregular plant, adapting to the morphology of the land.
Constructively, rises based stone walls of masonry, with the noblest parts (windows, doors, towers and corners) using ashlar stone and 14 towers of different shapes and sizes, among which the Torre del Homenaje or Tower Chaconne , embedded within the Sanctuary.
The entrance to the walled enclosure is made by a single door, protected by two square towers, from where you can see the shields of the Templar Commander Suarez Figueroa.
At the side the bastion, built in the early nineteenth, during the War of Independence.
