The conservation project, consolidation and restoration of the walls of the Castle of Caravaca la Cruz is nearing completion, as reported by the Town Planning, Enrique Fuentes, in his visit to the works, with the architect in charge of this performance of asset recovery, Juan de Dios de la Hoz.
The works have focused mainly on repair and replenish moisture problems losses stone elements in the paintings and turrets.
To this end, it has had a budget of 333,172 euros, of which 30.6% was provided by the City of Caravaca and 69.4% by the Ministry of Development, through its Cultural program for 1.5% conservation projects Spanish Historical Heritage.
Since last May, the date of the start of construction, has intervened both outside and inside the walls, improving the general conditions of the structure, with greater security and accessibility.
"In addition to the consolidation own actions, it has built a sort of sidewalk and perimeter channel that will prevent rainwater from seeping through the wall", according to Councilman Enrique Fuentes.
For his part, Juan de Dios de la Hoz highlighted the complexity of the works, since "it is not about doing the same operation repeatedly, since usually walled enclosures are the result of a process of addiction and modifications made long time. "
The architect also explained that "the project is culminating with a performance aimed at protecting the wall against the weather, with the same solution, water-based and natural pigments, which was applied at source, increasing by 5% in the south, exposed more to the sun. "
The project also collected actions related to security, with the installation of protective barriers in areas at risk of falling, especially at the entrance to the wells and stairs to the towers.
The walled enclosure of the Castle
The walled enclosure of the Castle of Caravaca de la Cruz has (X and XI centuries) Islamic origins, although much of the walls begin in the thirteenth century and rebuilt in the nineteenth.
It has a polygonal irregular plant, adapting to the morphology of the land.
Constructively, rises based stone walls of masonry, with the noblest parts (windows, doors, towers and corners) using ashlar stone and 14 towers of different shapes and sizes, among which the Torre del Homenaje or Tower Chaconne , embedded within the Sanctuary.
The entrance to the walled enclosure is made by a single door, protected by two square towers, from where you can see the shields of the Templar Commander Suarez Figueroa.
