The Councilor for the Environment in the City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz, Enrique Fuentes, has reported that centenarian oaks, located in 'El Copo', which were affected by the storm, are receiving the attention needed to attempt their recovery.
Heavy rainfall in the municipality during the past days 19 and 20 December caused the fall of two oaks and a third was affected by the support.
"These specimens, in addition to being in a natural site of municipal ownership highly appreciated and visited by the caravaqueños, have a high value and are collected in the inventory of unique trees in the Region of Murcia," as Enrique Fuentes said.
After the storm, the City Council immediately contacted the Office of Socioeconomic Impact of the Environment of the Autonomous Community to request technical and material assistance.
"According to the advice received, we discard the removal of the trees, since there is a certain possibility that they will survive if they remain in the same position as they were after the storm. Trying to raise them could mean that the few remaining roots were broken." Has detailed the councilman who runs the municipal area of Environment.
The first action carried out in the days after the storm, after the delimitation of the area for safety reasons, was the application of a treatment to reduce the transpiration of the leaves, and, in this way, reduce the risk of drying .
Likewise, a geotextile mesh was installed and the roots that were exposed were covered with fertile soil in order to protect them and to avoid the desiccation.
In the next few days a selective pruning will be carried out to reduce leaf mass.
The area in which these large holm oaks are located, next to the site of Las Fuentes del Marqués, is properly marked and the affected specimens, two of them with a normal diameter of 255 centimeters, must only be manipulated or pruned by technicians and personnel Authorized, for safety and because they are protected species of public patrimony.
The head of the Environment Department, Enrique Fuentes, wanted to thank the Office of Socioeconomic Impact of the Environment and the Forest Fire Defense Unit of the General Directorate for Rural and Forest Development, "since First moment we had knowledge of the facts, we work in a coordinated way so that this important natural heritage is not lost.
