The 16th century tables by the painter Hernando de Llanos are undergoing a process of restoration before becoming the centerpiece of the exhibition 'Signum', about the Renaissance in the Region of Murcia.

The mayor, José Moreno, visited the workshop, located inside the Basilica of Vera Cruz, where the restorer of the Carmelite Manuel Sánchez is carrying out this intervention, thanks to the financing Banco Santander and the Foundation Camino de la Cruz .

The visit also involved the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Javier Celdrán;

The sister of the Colegio de la Vera Cruz, Elisa Giménez-Girón, and the commercial director in Murcia of Banco Santander, Raúl Bastida Berenguer, as well as the Commissioner of Signum, Nacho Ruíz.

José Moreno has highlighted the importance of this action for the enhancement of the historic artistic heritage of Caravaca de la Cruz and the Region of Murcia.

He also stated that it is necessary for this restoration workshop to continue with other projects, once the intervention of the works of Hernando de Llanos has been completed, for which he has requested the involvement of the Autonomous Community: "Caravaca is providing tourism and deserves support The restoration of its valuable heritage, thus enhancing the cultural image of the region, beyond the sun and beach tourism. "

'Signum' will be held in the exhibition hall of the former Company of Jesus, from July 6 to December 1.

The tables of Hernando de LLanos, which tells the story of the 'Apparition of the Holy and Vera Cruz de Caravaca', will be the central axis of the exhibition, but other important works, such as 'La sagrada' Family 'of the painter Pedro Fernandez Murcian, great exponent of the Italian Renaissance, or original architectural elements of the courtyard of Vélez Blanco.

One of the challenges of this exhibition, as its curator has advanced, is to understand the key role of Caravaca de la Cruz and the Region of Murcia, an outstanding period in the history of art.

The restoration is being carried out in two phases.

In the first one is intervening in the four main tables: 'Prendimiento', 'Appearance', 'Baptism' and 'Interrogation'.

The second phase will be completed after the exhibition 'Signum', with the restoration of 'San Juan' and 'El Incendio', which were already intervened in 2003 and are in a better state of conservation.

The Spanish Renaissance painter Hernando de Llanos developed his work during the first quarter of the s.

His painting, influenced by Leonardo da Vinci, has a strong italianizing character.

The oil paintings, of identical dimensions, are dated around 1520 and belong to the Museum of the True Cross.
