The City Council of Caravaca de la Cruz has signed a collaboration agreement with the Cultural Association of Friends of the Giants and the Cofradía de la Vera Cruz to preserve and preserve the century-old tradition of the giants and continue to be ambassadors of the city in the Meetings held in different locations in the Spanish geography.
The document has been initialed by the mayor, José Moreno;
The sister of the Brotherhood, Elisa Giménez-Girón, and the president of the association, José Luis Robles.
The agreement establishes the commitment to preserve the "Giants and Cabezudos" of Caravaca de la Cruz, whose origins date back to the beginning of the 17th century, as well as to organize a national meeting, every seven years, coinciding with the celebration Of Jubilee Year.
Likewise, it is agreed the participation in those meetings that are held in other municipalities with tradition gigantera.
In Caravaca de la Cruz, the first references to the appearance of the Giants date back to 1612, linked to the celebration of Corpus Christi.
From 1780 until the middle of the nineteenth century, dances and giants were banned from religious celebrations and they joined the Fiestas in honor of Santísima and Vera Cruz.
Its full structuring, as we know it today occurs at the end of the twentieth century.
At present, the giants of Caravaca de la Cruz visit different points of Spanish geography, practicing as ambassadors of the city.
Since 1999, when the Association of Friends of the Giants made its first trip to the First Meeting of Giants of Zamora, they have not stopped traveling, visiting almost one hundred locations.
In all its exits they have been a vehicle transmitter, not only of the name of the city itself, but also of its festivals, its traditions and of the patroness, the Santísima and Vera Cruz.
In addition, the association takes care of a good part of the maintenance and care of the Giants in the days before the patron saint festivities, also committing to leave the Friday before the patron saint festivities.
The last departure of the Association of Friends of the Giants of Caravaca de la Cruz took place last June 11, to participate in the 'Trobada de Nanos i Gegants' of Alicante, during the events prior to the Festival of the Bonfires of San Juan 2017. It is also worth mentioning the IV National Gathering and Pilgrimage of Giants and Cabezudos, held in Caravaca last April 22, bringing together 12 groups from the Valencian Community, Murcia, Catalonia and Madrid.
