The San Eloy de los Plateros University Association has awarded Caravaca de la Cruz the appointment of 'True Contrasts of Honor', the highest title granted by this institution, which recognizes the historical importance of the silverware workshop in the city.
In this way, said association, belonging to the University of Murcia, also wants to show its support for the 2017 Jubilee Year.
The mayor, José Moreno, accompanied by the Councilor for Tourism in the Caravaqueño Consistory, Gloria Gómez, picked up this distinction during the academic ceremony held in the church of San Bartolomé de Murcia.
From the University Association San Eloy de los Plateros highlight that, on the occasion of the commemoration Jubilee Year 2017 and coinciding with the celebration of the pattern of the silversmiths, it has been wanted to grant this appointment in recognition of the historical importance that Caravaca has in the Region of Murcia, accompanied throughout the decades of an outstanding work of the guild of silverware.
Although there is news of the presence of silversmiths in Caravaca during the sixteenth and seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, it would be in the middle of the latter when it would reach its greatest importance.
The first news about this guild in the city dates from 1639, indicating that they were "under the protection of said Holy Relic", that is, the Caravaca Cross.
In 1766, date of writing of the ordinances, it was called Brotherhood and Congregation of Emptying of silver and Alchemy of Caravaca and continued having to the True Cross like Patroness.
