Caravaca de la Cruz hosts a concert in which historical scores found in the Regional Archive will be performed (20/12/2017)

The vocal group Cantoría, which is part of the Early Music Project platform, will perform today (20:00 hours) in the Church of Our Lady of Carmen in Caravaca de la Cruz the historical scores, dated from the late sixteenth century and the seventeenth century , which were found months ago in the General Archive of the Region of Murcia.

The concert has been organized by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, with the collaboration of Early Music Project, the University of Murcia and Campus Mare Nostrum.

The finding was presented by the Director General of Cultural Assets, Juan Antonio Lorca, who, accompanied by the singers, explained that "everything seems to indicate that some of the works found have not been sung for more than 300 years and are re-released in Caravaca thanks to a new collaboration between Culture and the Early Music Project platform ".

Following the track of some Christmas works that, according to the documents of the time, were sung in the Cathedral of Murcia in the 18th century, the young researchers of the platform Ignacio López and Miguel Martínez discovered the scores, bound together with some notarial records. of Caravaca de la Cruz from the years 1583 to 1604.

As a consequence of a subsequent binding, the protocols were assembled using the scores as courtesy sheets, a protection that was added between the covers and the pages of the notarial books.

This practice, common at the time, has allowed great musical works of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to have survived to this day.

Lorca thanked the young researchers and Cantoría "their passion for culture and their interest in recovering such an important part of our heritage as the musical one", and also highlighted "their work for the conservation and enhancement of music old approaching it to all types of audiences and detaching it from the label of cultured or elitist music that sometimes accompanies it ".

On this occasion, he added, "the collaboration with the Ministry has gone beyond the organization of an action, since it has managed to recover scores that remained hidden in our Archive, the place of custody of a large part of our documentary heritage in the that there are stored hundreds of thousands of books, manuscripts and photographs that build our identity ".

After the discovery, the technicians of the Archive unbound the book to extract the pages and, thanks to the collaboration of the University of Murcia, the Conservatory of Music of Murcia and the Higher School of Music of Catalonia, the Early Music Project team was able to verify the discovery of the scripts of three partially complete works.

It is a 'Dies Irae', a sequence used in the Requiem Mass, an 'Asperges Me' and a 'Vidi Aquam', processional antiphons that were sung at the beginning of the solemn masses.

The authorship of one of the pieces has been discovered, the 'Vidi Aquam', published by Tomás Luis de Victoria in his second book of Masses of 1592 and dedicated to Felipe II.

Particles were also found (the tenor and bass parts) of a Salve Regina with five voices, attributed to Fray Antonio de San Pedro;

as well as different musical parts of an incomplete doxology and sheets with musical writing tests.

The three works will be performed in the first part of the concert organized in Caravaca, where you will also hear a selection of Christmas music in the days of San Juan de la Cruz as' Sus, sus, sus de La Trulla '(Bartomeu Cárceres),' Riu riu chiu '(Cancionero de Uppsala),' Verbum caro factum est '(Cancionero de Uppsala),' Niño Dios d'amor hurt '(Francisco Guerrero),' Give me rejoicing, children of Eva '(Cancionero de Uppsala) and' The Dindirindín '(Mateo Flecha).

Lorca recalled that "the programming of this concert coincides with the last days of the 2017 Jubilee Year, which will continue during 2018 with the Region of Murcia Sacra project, which will contribute to highlighting the richness of our religious and cultural heritage while also providing special attention to two great poets and mystical authors linked to our Region as were Saint Teresa of Jesus and Saint John of the Cross. "

Cantoría is a vocal group composed of four young singers: Inés Alonso (soprano), Samuel Tapia (countertenor), Jorge Losana (tenor and direction) and Valentín Miralles (bass).

In the concert they will be accompanied by Luis Cantó (organ realejo).

Admission is free.
