Origin and history

In 1979 the pastor of Barranda Ramón García and the teacher Jesús María García have the initiative to carry out in our town the then called "Regional Music Festival of String".

This was supported by the mayordomos of the Fiestas (in charge of the organization of the Patron Saint Festivities) and sees the light under the protection of the local Fiestas in honor of the Virgen de la Candelaria, at the beginning of February.

It had a modest beginning, but quickly, the initiators had the support of institutions such as the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Autonomous Community of Murcia, the City of Caravaca, the local and regional media and, above all, the people of Barranda that conserved the popular manifestations associated to the traditional culture and maintained still alive the tradition of the music of the Aguilanderos.

A few years later, the Aguilarderos de Barranda themselves took over the responsibility of the organization, proving from the first years that the party had a life of its own, receiving more and more support and an influx of musicians and the public.

The party of the Cuadrillas is, in this type of festivals, the oldest of those that take place in Spain.

In 2011, he received the declaration of National Tourist Interest and Cultural Interest.

The existence of this Fiesta, which facilitates the gathering of musicians from different places, some of whom had long since stopped performing this music, revolutionized the world of the gangs: it caused many of those that had practically disappeared and that saw that Their way of celebrating was valid in our days, they came back to meet, they dusted or bought new instruments, and they renewed that fundamental aspect of the culture that is the oral transmission, thus joining the older ones to teach the younger ones and encouraging themselves to repeat rites traditional in their villages and create new competitions of gangs in their locations.

Also the traditional music and by extension, the Party of the Gangs, suppose something atypical nowadays, and is that children, young, old and old enjoy all together of a same manifestation.
