Barranda, 40 years of music against the rural exodus (26/01/2018)

We often hear in the media and in our immediate environment about the rural exodus, which is the emigration of young people from the countryside to the city.

A process that, not being new, because in our land had its maximum acceleration in the second half of the twentieth century, it does seem in an ascending and continuing situation.

In an eminently rural land like ours, with a municipal term that in the case of Caravaca is very extensive and with very low population density, this phenomenon is evident.

The lack of job opportunities and other factors make young people look for a future in the urban environment.

We are finishing a month of January that always makes us look at the rural world, return to those places that seem doomed to depopulation.

Pedanías like Benablón, La Almudema or Navares celebrate San Antón, with its ancestral traditions.

On the other hand, the Party of the Cuadrillas de Barranda is the musical finale to these celebrations that in January mark the rural geography of Caravaca.

To the dean appointment of traditional music in Spain it feels good to celebrate years.

Reaches quarantine with energy and vigor.

Those who, back in 1979, began to celebrate this meeting of cuadrillas in the context of the festivities to the Virgen de la Candelaria, perhaps did not imagine that it would be declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest and of Cultural Interest.

The role that these parties play in the population settlement, although it may seem secondary, is important.

Behind them there is a youth involved with their land.

Many of them do not want to lose the bond even if they have gone abroad.

Other young people have decided not to move from there.

Behind, for example, the parties commissions of the districts or the Aguilanderos de Barranda there are people who live permanently in the town or not, they know that periodically there have a date, an illusion, a commitment.

This connection explodes, in the case of Barranda, in the outbreak of celebration and joy every last Sunday of January.

This energy can be translated into seeking or generating job opportunities when people do not want to leave the land that saw them be born.

To have an identity, to be proud of it, it is necessary to start from there wanting to improve the place in which one has decided to fix his life.

The councilors that are part of the Popular Group of Caravaca understand that this is so, and therefore, from our concept of constructive opposition, we work for the districts and rural areas.

The evidence supports this, as we have addressed how to improve agriculture and livestock, the use of water, the role of women in rural areas, tourism or, in short, any initiative that generates economic activity and employment.

To foment the traditions, like this Party of the Cuadrillas that celebrates 40 happy years, is also to fight against the sadness of the rural exodus.

Lending a hand to its organizers so that the economic aid coming from the Autonomous Community is increasing or finding new ways of financing, for example, through the Plan Associate, are also ways to make this constructive opposition.

The Plan Associate, launched by the Ministry of Culture, aims to convene financial grants to non-profit entities and foundations to contribute to the expenses of cultural events held in the various municipalities of the Region of Murcia.

Folklore is one of the disciplines included in these aids, to which the Barranda Aguilanderos can choose.

Every small gesture counts to ensure that our people do not lose their pulse.

We will keep trying.
