The reproduction of this small insectivorous raptor is threatened by invasive episodes of parasites in the spaces where they nest
Framed in the program of environmental activities carried out by the Association for the Defense of Nature 'Caralluma' in collaboration with the Department of Environment of the City of Caravaca de la Cruz, this Saturday, February 24, a Conservation Day of the Cernícalo Primilla, with different activities such as nest-tile installation, adaptation of nests, cleaning and disinsection of lairs.
On this day, the first Primilla Kestrels of the season will also be observed and nests will be built for protective birds.
To participate in the activity, you must register for free through a private message to the Facebook page 'Caralluma.

From the Ringing Group of 'Caralluma' explain that during the campaign of scientific ringing of 2015, in the Caravaca field "was detected a recurrent massive attack of ectoparasites in the dens where these beneficial raptors nest." The invasion was so serious and expansive piojillo that caused almost a score of chicks of several nests, gripped by the itch, jumped from the nest to the void, dying by impact on the ground or devoured by predators. This zoosanitary problem may have been exacerbated by the extreme heat of summer and the presence of numerous domestic pigeons, the main transmission vector for mites, in rural constructions where both species interact and nest. This anomalous circumstance caused the lowest reproductive success since 1988, the year in which 'Caralluma' started the conservation work and ringing of the colony of the caravaqueño field, then, the only one known in the Region of Murcia ".
To avoid new invasive episodes of avian piojillos, next Saturday will be carried out the zoosanitary treatment of the holes and tiles-nest where the kestrels nest, disinfecting them by pressure sprinkler with zoosanitary products that do not affect the birds and control the presence of ectoparasites.
In addition, the caked excrement at the base of the nests is eliminated, replacing the concavity of the nest with sand treated with acaricides.
Also will be installed in the larger holes wooden boards with a hole of six centimeters in diameter to prevent the entry of pigeons and allow access to adult breeding of this small insectivorous raptor.
On the other hand, in the near future, twenty nest tiles will be installed in the La Junquera farmhouse to allow adults to enter the roof sections where these raptors prepare their nests.
The Kestrel Primilla winters in the south of the Sahara and arrives at this area of the peninsula at the end of February.
Its presence is beneficial for agriculture, since it feeds on insects - such as locusts - and small rodents, as well as being a good bioindicator of climate change.
It can be considered the smallest of the hawks.
Until the middle of the last century, he was a frequent inhabitant of towers, farmhouses, houses, palaces and castles located in regions dedicated to agriculture and extensive livestock, where they could find abundant invertebrates with which to feed.
