The City of Caravaca de la Cruz participates this Saturday, March 24, in the global campaign 'Earth Hour', an initiative promoted by the NGO WWF Spain, to which are added more than 7,000 cities, from 187 countries of the world .

From the Department of the Environment inform that, from 20.30 to 21.30, the lighting of three of the most representative spaces of the city will be turned off: the Caravaca Castle, the Templete and the City Hall building.

In this way, the Caravaqueño Consistory is part, one more year, of this campaign, which promotes the defense of the Planet, betting on renewable development and fighting against the loss of biodiversity, while encouraging all the neighbors, companies and organizations to join it because we are all part of the solution to climate change.

Earth Hour was born 11 years ago, in Sydney, as a symbolic gesture to draw attention to the problem of climate change.

Turning off the lights of homes, buildings and emblematic monuments for an hour was the simple action that would later articulate a growing global movement for the Planet.

Last year thousands of cities from 187 countries participated, which put out more than 12,000 monuments and iconic buildings, uniting citizens, businesses, municipalities and institutions to, among all, "change climate change."

With this last theme, direct actions have been promoted to combat climate change and develop conservation initiatives beyond climate action.

And so, 'Earth Hour' has become a unique opportunity to defend the planet, promoting sustainable lifestyles, promoting renewable development, conserving our forests, seas and natural resources or fighting the loss of biodiversity.

The 'Paris Agreement' establishes 2020 as the deadline to start implementing the commitments to reduce CO2 emissions worldwide.

Municipalities have a great responsibility to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and thus curb the loss of biological diversity.

Reducing energy consumption, promoting self-consumption, promoting mobility without emissions, greening cities, restoring rivers and forests are measures that many municipalities are already undertaking.

We live in the warmest period of history, with prolonged heat waves and droughts, increasingly frequent extreme weather events and displacement of people due to climate change, which is also one of the main causes of biodiversity loss.

Because everything is connected, because they are two sides of the same coin, 'Earth Hour' will connect hundreds of millions of people in the world to act against climate change and the loss of biodiversity.

In 2018, Earth Hour calls once again for the union of all, individuals, municipalities, companies and organizations, to turn off the light because there are many reasons to do so.
