Professor of Archaeology at the University of Murcia, Ramallo Asensio, and the archaeologist municipal de Caravaca de la Cruz, Francisco Brotons, have conducted an archaeological excavation at the site of Los Villares, located in the Strait Historic Site Cuevas of La Encarnación de Caravaca .
This excavation is part of a research project sponsored by the University of Murcia, which has developed over the past two years.
The work has been done on the site where is located the ancient Roman town of Asso and have enjoyed the cooperation of students of the Graduate Program in Applied Archaeology and History students have conducted their business practices in the field and on the premises of the Archaeological Museum of La Soledad de Caravaca under an agreement between the city of Caravaca and the University of Murcia.
The archaeological survey has identified a prolonged occupation of the site, which so far falls between the fourth century BC and the Middle Ages.
The municipal archaeologist and director of the Archaeological Museum of La Soledad has explained "that the polls have been conducted with the intention of determining the possible historical and cultural sequence of this enclave and contrast the results of the excavation with the data obtained surface prospecting undertaken before. "
The municipal archaeologist pointed out that this place is located in other locations of interest such as the Iberian-Roman sanctuary Cerro de la Ermita de la Encarnación, where are the structures of the oldest Roman temples in the Iberian Peninsula, partially preserved and embedded in one's own Christian chapel.
