A total of 27 people are part of the "experts" that the Foundation for Education, Health and Society in the town is developing in collaboration with the Department of Health of the City of Caravaca.
"Expert Patient" is a pioneering initiative in the municipality with which it aims to help people with obesity and prevent related diseases.
Patients enrolled attend weekly group therapy in which they promote healthy lifestyles and power motivation and commitment as key elements for self-care.
In this regard, the Health Councillor, Mercedes Velez, explained that "the success of this program, which is producing excellent results in the Region of Murcia, is that not imposing a regime of weight loss but focuses on promoting motivation and patient education about the benefits of a healthy diet. "
Velez is satisfied with the reception of this accredited program for the prevention of diseases such as obesity, diabetes or smoking.
The program is aimed at patients, families, carers and professionals and its main objective is to promote self-care following the method of Chronic Disease at Stanford University in the United States.
Self-care has proven to be an efficient way to reduce health spending, helping to reduce the number of hospital admissions and emergency room consultations, and promoting more rational use of medication and an improvement in the relationship between doctor and patient.
