87 percent of the irrigable area of the Region is undertaking modernization with drip irrigation systems
The president of the Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, accompanied by the mayor of Caravaca, Domingo Aranda, today inaugurated the series of actions for improvement and modernization of irrigation in an area of ​​over a thousand hectares, through the construction of reservoirs and the works pipeline which supplies water to the plots of crops.
During the ceremony, the chief executive stressed the "great transformation" that have promoted irrigation Archivel's Eyes, Benablon, ax and Guarino, belonging to the villages of Archivel, Barranda and Benablon, and belonging to the Community Northwest General to "improve irrigation systems and adapt to these new crops irrigated areas."
In total, 663 farmers have benefited from these actions within the Improvement Plan of the General Community Irrigation started in 1999 and have been implemented in two phases.
In a first, there were four reservoirs with a capacity of 500,000 cubic meters and 18 kilometers of pipeline connection with an investment of 2.1 million euros financed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Water, and irrigators in the area.
The second phase has included the works related to water distribution to irrigated areas with 153 kilometers of pipeline and installation of volumetric meters on the plot and the computerization of this system, which allows "a comprehensive control water use, "said Valcarcel.
These actions have received an investment of five million euros.
Valcárcel President stressed that the transformation brought by irrigators in the area "has been exemplary", adding that these actions have allowed "the habits of farmers by improving their quality of life."
The computerization of the irrigation process eliminates night shifts, ensuring the availability of water steadily and fairly distribute the volumes of water between different irrigation schemes, depending on time of year.
With these actions are conducive to higher yields and better product quality, to reduce shipments of water for irrigation, which was done every 60 days before modernization, 1 day, ie the water every day, with rationalizing water resources better.
Crop conversion
The completion of the modernization work has allowed the planting of fruit trees in intensive cultivation by 10 percent in the area of ​​the Community of Irrigators.
The new irrigation system will facilitate the introduction of new crops and the conversion of those who were less profitable and others more intensive production and more demand, said Valcarcel.
Also, the chief executive said that the Region has addressed a comprehensive improvement of the irrigable area, "and noted that 87 percent of irrigation Murcia" are ongoing processes of modernization with drip irrigation systems.
