The City of Caravaca de la Cruz, through its Department of Youth and Culture has launched a campaign of excavation at the site of Cerro de las Fuentes, situated in the hamlet of Archivel.
In the work, led by archaeologist Francisco Brontóns are participating students at the University of Murcia, and a group of volunteers caravaqueños.
The campaigns conducted in the enclave in recent years have allowed to come out one of the most important peninsular sites for knowledge of a fact in Roman history: the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great between the years 49 and 44 BC, an event that affected so intense the Iberian Peninsula but lacking to date materials and structural elements and was only known from written sources.
"Since 2001, through various fields of work, is betting on the recovery and value of this site, where they are located next to the remains of the hill of the florets Barranda, the only known military structures on the peninsula episodes of the war between Caesar and Pompey, "said the mayor of Culture, Maria Cruz Perez, during the visit to the Cerro de las Fuentes.
Young people are developing cleaning and excavation at the site, an area of ​​about 4,400 square meters is located the castle where late-Republican.
In this regard, the mayor of Youth, Antonia M ª Álvarez, noted that "this activity allows the young people involved socially and culturally enriching to use part of their summer free time to recover the historical heritage."
