The City of Caravaca de la Cruz will begin the process of twinning with the Mexican island of Cozumel, known as the Island of the Swallows.
The proposal was approved with the support of all political groups in the plenary session on the evening of yesterday.
Cozumel authorities contacted the City and the Confraternity of the Vera Cruz to make known the devotion and the bonds that the population has with the patron saint of Caravaca.
Specifically, its mayor, Aurelio Joaquin Omar, told the mayor, Domingo Aranda, his hope that both cities forging links through a partnership with the aim of promoting tourism and trade relations.
In addition, Cozumel will start building a church dedicated to the worship of the Cross of Caravaca on the promenade, where it appears that the first Mass was held on Mexican soil.
"The relationship we started and we will continue to promote over time will enrich both cities in the religious, cultural, social and economic development", as declared by the mayor of Caravaca.
The origin Cozumel links with the Cross of Caravaca is on the discovery of three replicas on the Spanish ship "Matancero" which ran aground and disappeared into one of the reefs off its coast in 1741 and was found in 1956.
From that discovery, the patron saint of Caravaca is considered protective against hurricanes and winds threaten the island every year.
In honor of the Holy Cross is celebrated the feast of Cedral, which, like the Wine Horses is in process of becoming Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Cozumel, with about 80,000 inhabitants, is the third largest island in Mexico and belongs to the state of Quintana Roo.
