The mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, Domingo Aranda, and the Mayor of Cozumel, Aurelio Joaquin Gonzalez, have made official twinning between the two cities by signing an agreement by which they undertake to establish ways to work together to promote tourism and trade in both places.
The ceremony took place in the Hall Xel-Ha Palace Cozumel City during the celebration of the Twenty-first Ordinary Session of the Council.
In the preamble, is described this initiative as "an alliance of friendship, faith, coincidences and common interests that bring benefits to both cities."
The president of the Mexican island during the council said that "Cozumel has been characterized as a tourist town of traditions and customs, which shares an affinity with the town of Caravaca de la Cruz, as both have similar festivities. The festivities in honor of the Holy Cross in Cozumel and the True Cross in Caravaca both dates coincide as its cultural and religious value. "
Aranda Sunday, accompanied by the brother of the Confraternity of the Vera Cruz, Pedro Pozo, received the title of twinning and later visited the site at which to build the church dedicated to the Cross of Caravaca.
The origin of Cozumel links with the Cross of Caravaca is on the discovery of three replicas on the Spanish ship "Matancero" which ran aground and disappeared into one of the reefs off its coast in 1741 and was found in 1956.
Since this discovery, the patron saint of Caravaca is considered protective against hurricanes and winds that threaten the island every year.
In honor of the Holy Cross is celebrated the feast of Cedral, which, like the Wine Horses is in the process of becoming Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
Cozumel is known as the Island of the Swallows.
With about 80,000 inhabitants, is the third largest island in Mexico and belongs to the state of Quintana Roo.
