The City of Caravaca de la Cruz has received the free transfer of the monastery and the church of San José de las Madres Delacalzas Carmelites, historical building located on Main Street and founded in 1576 by St. Teresa.
The handover has materialized by signing a cooperation agreement signed by the mayor, Domingo Aranda, and company representatives Parador del Convento, owner of the property after the transfer order.
As has been explained the mayor, Domingo Aranda, City Council and the Directorate General of Cultural Assets transferred in successive meetings at the company owning the convent high interest in recovering and open this innumeble historic given the proximity of the commemoration of the V Centenary of the Birth of Santa Teresa and tourism and cultural events to be held for that purpose.
In this sense, Domingo Aranda thanked the cooperation the company has provided for the proper performance of this agreement.
The monastery of San José was declared of Cultural Interest (BIC) in the Monument category.
Is also listed in Caravaca with PERI category of "Outstanding".
Moreover, as reflected in the Law of Patrimino histótico Spanish, owners must permit and facilitate the public visit at least four days per month.
"The interest of the City goes beyond the monthly open days, and we want to be the headquarters of the activities of the Teresian Year, making room for music, the arts or theatrical tours, activities always linked to the figure of St. Teresa of Jesus and the Order of Carmel, "reported the mayor.
The company has given free use of the property to Consitorio for about a year, during which can be successively extended for equal periods of time.
During the lifetime of the agreement, the City assumes the ordinary mantenimieno the property and garden.

The General Order of Discalced Carmelite Sisters recognized as cities Avila, Alba de Tormes, Medina del Campo, Malagon, Valladolid, Toledo, Pastrana, Salamanca, Segovia, Beas de Segura, Sevilla, Caravaca de la Cruz, Villanueva de la Jara, Plasencia, Soria, Burgos, and Granada.
