The lamb has got segureño Designation of Origin (PDO).
The European Commission yesterday decided to approve this QA for segureña race and include it in the list of 1,200 foods covered by EU regulations.
The mayor, Domingo Aranda, has positively assessed this final approval by the European Union as it is an important for the livestock sector as a source of job creation and economic development momentum.
In this sense, the mayor pointed out that currently is working on the "Pastors School" project, aimed at the training of pastors to make better use of livestock farms.
The school will be located in Archivel and will also host the association of breeders of sheep segureño Region.
The segureño lamb that grows in parts of the city of Murcia and Caravaca de la Cruz and other points of pronvincias Albacete, Almería, Granada and Jaen, is a breed of sheep fully adapted to life in the mountains of Segura and upland areas of the bank of that river.
Protected Designation of Origin ensures traceability and quality of lamb throughout the production chain to the consumer by corresponding records and identification systems of the IGP in the different links of the same.
In order to promote the breed and disseminate improvements thereon, the City of Caravaca de la Cruz and the Regional Sheep Breeders Association Seguereño (ARCOS) organized annually since 1991 Auction Competition Sheep Race Segureña in archivel.
