The Conception church reopens for worship after the completion of comprehensive rehabilitation project (07/10/2008)

Juan Antonio Reig Pla, will preside on Tuesday, at 20.00 hours, reopening the solemn Mass of the worship of the Church of the Immaculate Conception.

The temple, considered one of the great exponents of nineteenth century architecture of the region with a magnificent coffered ceiling, reopened its doors following the completion of a comprehensive rehabilitation project implemented under a cooperation agreement signed between the Ministry Culture, the Diocese of Cartagena, Caravaca City Council and the Foundation Cajamurcia.

Before the ceremony, at 17.00, the mayor of Caravaca, Domingo Aranda, Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Maria Luisa Lopez, director of the Foundation Cajamurcia, Jose Moreno, the vicar of area, Don Alfonso Ortiz, and the lead architect for the project, Juan de Dios de la Hoz, visit the church.

With a total budget of 648,000 euros, the actions taken have included the complete restoration of the walls and stone quarrying, the enhancement of the vestry and the chancel, the recovery of the chapels and the restoration of the exterior facade.

The project has been completed with the installation of air conditioning systems, electricity and lighting.

It is worth noting the work done in the Chapel of St. John Lateran, where they have recovered walled hollow, drum and cupola of the same.

"As a result of previous works, the chapel was mutilated and after this performance, has recovered its columns, bases, capitals, shafts lighting and even much of its polychromy," remarked the architect specializing in restoration of monuments, John God de la Hoz, who also noted that the facade has regained its original size and type.

The works executed by the company specializes in work Murcia historical and artistic Azuche 88, have had the architect Juan de Dios de la Hoz and in the actions carried out outside the temple, Santiago Salinas Sánchez .

SOME FINDINGS IN THE WORKS.

In the course of the work has appeared the bow that gave access from the chancel, the old Chapel of Cristo de la Misericordia, now defunct.

This arch, which was behind a wall partition walls of brick, has been seen and will soon proceed to full restoration, as well as retablos of the church.

It is also interesting to note the recovery of two walled cavities in the Chapel of St. John Lateran, and also recovery of the drum and lantern cupola of the same, completely mutilated in previous works and has now recovered its columns, bases, capitals, light holes and even much of its polychromy.

Finally, note that the facade of the sacristy remained traces much of the perimeter holes and decorations thereof, which has enabled us to recover its original dimensions and complete typology of them.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF BUILDING: a single nave church with four sections separated by arches.

Plant approximately square head topped with a ribbed vault with plaster webs.

In the second tranche will open the side chapels of St. John Lateran (on the side of the Gospel and also topped vault and flashlight in the key) and the Christ (Epistle side), topped with a vault without ribs.

The next two sections are covered with magnificent woodwork armor panels supported on three arches on the cross to the ship.

Finally the last, much smaller, but covered with an armor of similar characteristics, the choir hosts the space up, as a lattice wrought in wood.

BRIEF HISTORICAL DATA: This is a symbolic monument to Caravaca and the Region of Murcia, both for its artistic importance, for its historical value concerning the side of traditional buildings and ceilings covered with wood carved ceilings and ever XV and XVI and, secondly, the vicissitudes of the Guild Hospital of St. John Lateran, the promoter of the films from their settlement in Caravaca.

In addition, there are illustrious names connected with it, such as the Martin stonemason and carpenter John Homa Miravete at its inception, or Damian Pla, and in the nineteenth century, who finishes the work of the tower.

It has three different construction stages, the first of which would place between approximately 1532 and 1560, when performing the trace, the header, the main body of the church with the exception of the grandstand and the stretch of the feet and the two chapels side.

Later, between 1587-1590 was carried out construction of the hospital attached to the north side of building (now defunct).

Finally, between 1609-1620 the tower was carried out three bodies of seating and the latest in solid brick solutions responding to the late eighteenth century.

Historic-Artistic Monument in accordance with the 1983 publication of the RD 2881/1983 of 21 Sep. Since 2006 there have been several phases of works to complete restoration is complete.
