Discover the original gateway to the Castillo de Caravaca (29/01/2010)

Chance and fate have wanted, a few days before the start of the Holy Year 2010, it discovered the original gateway to the Castillo de Caravaca de la Cruz, and admitted to the fortress where pilgrims and prominent personalities who visited the place the Middle Ages to the seventeenth century.

This important finding has occurred when running the project to build a complementary to the existing toilets inside the walls, next to the current gateway.

The mayor of Caravaca, Domingo Aranda, the Director of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage, Enrique Ujaldón, and the director of museums in Caravaca Jubilee Indalecio Well, today presented this finding, together with the architect works director, Juan Francisco Navarro and the archaeologist in charge of conducting the work, Silvia Martinez.

Ujaldón Aranda and expressed their satisfaction with this discovery, which is very good news for the Archaeology of the Region of Murcia.

They have also reported that in the coming weeks, archaeologists continue to work to consolidate field and study of the remains.

Among the remains found is necessary to review the appearance of sections of the ancient castle walls, comprising a wall canvas walls, medieval, and, most importantly, highlights the monumental gate that led to the castle which requires rethinking Caravaca the chronology of current cover and review all the recent scientific literature on the structure and organization of the castle until well into the eighteenth century.

During the press conference explained that they chose to deploy the toilets in this place, discarding other possible locations, precisely because the analysis of the available evidence allowed portend no indication that there might be remains buried, much less of a certain entity.

However, the reality and further development of the work has been very different predicted: the discovery of important monumental architectural elements that remained buried and were completely unknown to the present.

"The interior door opening has been located and hidden partition walls was supplemented at a level below the concourse and, therefore, it was impossible to get inside without digging before," reported Indalecio Pozo, who has argued that the present gateway to the Castle was opened in 1616 for the entry of cattle carrying the materials needed for the execution of the work of new tempo of Santa Cruz.

"For some years in the first half of the eighteenth century Castillo descriptions mention both doors, but they always say the first door as he climbed to the castle, or the tower, was closed by a wooden fence and inside was a image of Cristo del Milagro, being a sort of chapel.

It is very probable that the cult of the chapel was removed during the War of Independence or the Carlist Wars.

Later, with the National Pilgrimage 1907, the chapel and adjoining rooms were used as a shelter or asylum of pilgrims, "he explained.

According to reports, "we think that by this gate entered the castle the pilgrims and all the important people who visited the site until the seventeenth century, as the masters Santiaguista Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa and the Infante Don Enrique, or the king himself Ferdinand when, back from making Huéscar in the summer of 1488, passed by Caravaca and went to worship the True Cross, donating a lamp whose relic piece, consolidated in 1781, still stands. "

The door that was found is plotted in the central area of the ground floor of the tower.

Its basic structure consists of a narrow traffic of 2.50 meters wide and probably rectangular, arranged transversely to the axis of the tower, while the sides of it are apparently occupied by massive bodies or square cubes constructed Cob land.

The entrance is covered by a barrel vault in masonry that further accentuates the sensation of elongated nave and aisle.

Under the eastern end of the vault to the inside of the castle, find the inner cover formed by arch of stone voussoirs light yellow, very well preserved.

Not yet found the essential arc opposite the western side, corresponding to the outer cover.
